The Good Bones family is about to gain another generation! The HGTV series already stars mother-daughter house-flipping duo Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak—and now Mina and her husband, Steve Hawk, are expecting their first child.
Recently, Ikaroo.info sat down with Mina and Karen for a chat about motherhood as well as the show's new season. Here's everything we know about the HGTV star's pregnancy and the Good Bones baby so far.
Mina Starsiak's due date.
At first HGTV simply teased that the baby was due "later this summer," but in our interview on April 9, Mina clarified she was 22 weeks, which would put her due date somewhere around August 13.
"You didn't show at all until 19 weeks," Karen told Mina during the video. "She just looked like maybe she'd eaten a burrito."
The Good Bones baby's gender.
Mina and Steve, who were married June 2016 and share three dogs, have already told close family and friends whether they're having a boy or a girl, but they've chosen not to reveal the baby's gender publicly just yet.
During our conversation, we asked Mina and Karen to try the "ring-on-a-string" gender test just for fun. When Karen dangled a string attached to Mina's wedding ring over her bump, it swung in a circle. If correct, that would make the baby a girl, but "stay tuned," as Karen said.
Baby Hawk already has a nickname.
Grandma Karen calls the baby "Fledgling" because of Mina and Steve's last name (Hawk)—and because she needed something to call the baby other than "him" or "her" so as not to accidentally reveal the gender in conversation.
Mina's baby bump will appear on Good Bones.
Eagle-eyed fans might catch a glimpse of Mina's growing stomach, as some of the scenes this season were filmed while she was pregnant. Viewers might also notice that Mina no longer performs a few physical tasks, such as working on roofs, for safety purposes.
"When I was somewhere between six and eight weeks, I fell about thigh-deep through a couple floor joists," Mina told us. "My very first reaction to Mom was, 'Don't tell my husband.' But I went home and told on myself and he just kind of gave me the look. I said 'I'm not going to do it anymore.'"
The couple had the cutest pregnancy announcement.
A cute movie poster parody on Instagram revealed the happy news.
"[Steve] and I are suuuper excited to finally announce.... Baby Hawk coming 2018!!!!" Mina captioned the photo. "We’re thrilled for this first baby journey and that we’re going to be able to share it all with YOU!"
And there's even more good news for Good Bones fans: Viewers will get to share in the excitement, as Mina says a "special episode of our forever home build for baby is in the works!!!!"
Mina told her husband—and her mom—in the most creative way.
After the word was out, HGTV gave a sneak peek at the precious moment Mina gave Steve the baby news, as well as Karen's reaction to finding out she's going to be a grandma (hint: lots of happy screaming and hugs).
To reveal the news to her husband, Mina gifted him a pair of booties, . For her mom, a wooden rendering of the logo for their business, Two Chicks & A Hammer—with the addition of another tiny chick.
"I wanted to do something a little creative, and people always say, 'When's the baby chick coming?'" Mina told the outlet. "I had a local woodworker make the Two Chicks logo, and there's a puzzle piece where the baby chick will go next to it."
What Steve and Mina will be like as parents.
When it come to parenting, Mina says Steve will be the "softie," and she'll be the "disciplinarian."
What Mina hopes to teach her child.
"I would be very happy if they were just semi-well-adjusted and kind. I'm not very nice, so that's going to be hard. But my husband is," Mina said.
By well-adjusted, Mina said she means "no participation trophies." "Learn that you're not good at everything and you're going to fail at some things."
This won't be the couple's first time taking care of a child.
Mina and Steve already have some parenting experience after fostering Mina's two-year-old niece, Julie, or "Juju Bean," for nine months "while my sister figured out her stuff," Mina told .
"It was very unexpected but once we figured it out, it was really, really awesome," she continued to the publication. "I'm glad we got to be there for her when she needed some help."
The experience also gave Karen a sneak peek of what her daughter will be like as a mother. "When she had Julie living with her, there was this person I saw that I hadn't seen before," Karen told us. "I can't wait for her to be a mom. I make jokes about what kind of mom you're going to be, but I'm really excited because all of your best qualities come out when you're being a mom."
Baby Hawk is the latest in a line of HGTV babies. Home Town's Erin and Ben Napier welcomed their first daughter, Helen, in January, and Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper are currently expecting their fifth child.
