There's nothing like the bond between a furry friend and its owner, and the new trailer for A Dog's Way Home shows just how strong that connection can be. The movie tells the story of Bella, a super-sweet puppy who one day runs right into the arms of Lucas, (Jonah Hauer-King) who can't help but bring her home.
The two become inseparable, but one day, after chasing a squirrel out of her neighborhood, Bella finds herself lost and confused. She must travel through the Colorado wilderness—fending off wolves and befriending a cougar—to get back to her beloved owner.
The film is based off the , which is authored by W. Bruce Cameron—who also wrote . Although A Dog's Way Home isn't a sequel, it is a similarly heartwarming story. "With this movie, it’s really emotional and it gets you," Bryce Dallas Howard, who voices Bella, told . "But I would say it’s fun. There’s a lot of fun, there’s a lot of adventure."
Along with a some pretty intense scenes, the trailer also shows a few of those fun moments, including the pooch snagging an entire steak from a family's barbecue. But perhaps one of the best parts about the movie is that both children and adults can tune in for Bella's journey. "I think it’s really appropriate for younger kids,” Bryce said.
The film, which also stars Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos, and Alexandra Shipp, doesn't come out until next year, so you have plenty of time to stock up on tissues in the meantime. A Dog's Way Home comes to theaters on January 11, 2019.
