Olivia Benson broke Law & Order: SVU fans’ hearts in the latest episode.
On “Part 33” Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and the team wrestled with how to handle an emotional case centered around a woman named Annabeth (Amy Rutberg), who killed her abusive husband. Benson has a particularly difficult time grasping what to do if she has to testify, as she is still recovering from her traumatic kidnapping back in season 15.
In a heartbreaking clip between Benson and Rollins (Kelli Giddish), Benson tries to convince Rollins that Annabeth’s crime was justified as she was, “powerless to leave her husband.” The pair’s conversation grows more and more heated until Benson finally starts recounting her experience with her abductor, William Lewis. The powerful scene left everyone, including Rollins, devastated for Benson.
Fans of the longtime show took to social media to praise Mariska for her gut-wrenching performance, and for weighing in on a conversation that isn’t “always black and white.” Some even suggested Mariska, “deserves an Emmy for her phenomenal job on tonight’s episode.” Another follower commented, “Last night had to be your best yet and you have had many.”
Others thought the entire cast deserved their kudos for the “intense” hour. “One of the best episodes of all time,” one person wrote. “This episode! Over 20 years of watching Law and Order franchise…..then THIS episode. Wow,” another said. “From start to finish we were gripped to the edge of our seats,” said a fan.
