The 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony gathered the leading ladies of country music to honor our queen Dolly Parton in a star-studded tribute. The performance included Dolly, Kacey Musgraves, Miley Cyrus, Maren Morris, Little Big Town, and, uh, Katy Perry?
The latter left viewers feeling rather puzzled, especially when Dolly, Kacey, and Katy got together to sing the Dolly classic, Suffice it to say, people were not thrilled about the rendition.
"Starting off this Dolly Parton tribute with...*checks notes*... Katy Perry," a follower sarcastically tweeted. "Who let Katy Perry be in this Dolly tribute, I just want to talk," another person added. "Somebody tell Katy Perry she’s honoring Dolly, not trying out for American Idol," one fan quipped. "You ruined that song!" one even claimed.
Though diehard Dolly fans were a bit disappointed, Dolly only had the sweetest words to say after the show. "I will always love you!! Thanks for joining me tonight!" to all the performers she sang with—yes, including Katy.
Although the collaboration seems a bit strange, this actually isn't the first time the American Idol judge has joined either artist on stage. Katy and Dolly teamed up to sing a medley of "," "," and "" at the 2016 Academy of Country Music Awards.
The "" singer also seems to be good friends with Kacey. Last night, Katy of the duo singing together with the caption: "Been sangin' Dolly with you since 2014. So proud of your growth ❤️ Rootin' for you tonight @KaceyMusgraves This is your #GoldenHour."
At least everyone can agree on one thing: We're always rootin' for Kacey!
