Is Ducky Leaving 'NCIS'?

David McCallum's character might be exiting after season 16.

Rumors have been circulating for months that a member of the NCIS cast might be leaving. Many suspected that it was Sean Murray's McGee or even Mark Harmon himself. But now it looks like there’s someone else on the way out—and it’s very unexpected.

David McCallum, who plays Donald Mallard AKA “Ducky,” on the show made it pretty clear during the episode, that he’s ready to move on from his time at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. According to , he’s only been seen a handful of times throughout season 16, and now it appears he wants to make his absence permanent.

We first discovered the seasoned medical examiner was considering an exit during his conversation with Anthony DiNozzo Sr. (Robert Wagner). Ducky cryptically said, “This may be my last autopsy for a while, perhaps ever.”

His reason? “I’m not sure there’s a place for me here,” he explained. “Dr. Palmer is an exceptional medical examiner who has every right to resent my return. I daresay, I might feel the same way if the roles were reversed.”

Dr. Palmer (Brian Dietzen) does seem to have a handle on things while Ducky is away, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need you, Ducky! Dr. Palmer, who overheard the interaction, agreed with us, assuring Ducky that, “I have never resented you."

Our worst fears were realized even more so later, when Ducky confronted Gibbs (Mark Harmon) about his plans. Before he and Anthony headed out for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Ball, Ducky got it all off of his chest.

“I’m not entirely sure, but one thing I am certain of: My future will no longer include NCIS,” he said. “I’ve done all I have to do. It’s time for Dr. Palmer to be the permanent chief medical examiner. I’m sorry.”

Gibbs's shocked and disappointed face is ALL OF US as we try to fully grasp an NCIS future without wise Ducky.

At the time of publishing, the network had not confirmed to Ikaroo.info if this will be David’s last season on the show. According to , he has at least four episodes left, so it’s not quite time to say goodbye yet.

All we’re saying is, maybe you should start emotionally preparing for Ducky to join Ziva and Abby in a few weeks.
