When Calls the Heart isn’t getting cancelled, but it still may be awhile before the show graces Hearties’ TV screens again.
News broke in March that actress Lori Loughlin, who plays Abigail Stanton on the Hallmark show, and her husband Mossimo Giannulli were reportedly involved in a large-scale scandal that alleged the couple cheated to get her two daughters into USC. The fallout was massive, leading to the network’s decision to drop her from their shows and movies.
This had longtime WCTH fans concerned the series would get cancelled—especially after Hallmark decided not to air the episode that was planned for Sunday, March 17. Fortunately, on the company account cleared up any speculation, with the caption reading they have “no plans” to end the long-running period drama, which just returned for its sixth season in February.
Now, Hallmark is releasing even more details about how they’re recovering from the bombshell report. Executive producer Brian Bird shared a lengthy statement thanking fans for their support, and asking for forgiveness for “staying silent while we sorted through how to respond.” He also revealed how they plan to move forward without Lori:
“As for the show itself, we know millions of fans are on pins and needles wondering what will happen now. Let us reassure you, When Calls the Heart has always been bigger than the sum of its parts, and it HAS NOT BEEN CANCELED. With the full support of the network, we have gone on a creative hiatus to do some retooling on the remaining Season 6 episodes. That process has already begun. Hope Valley will return to your TV screens as soon as we can bring the episodes to you.”
It remains unclear exactly how they’ll handle the exit of Lori’s character, or when they plan to return from the "hiatus," but we can at least rest easy knowing the creators are hard at work to bring us back to Hope Valley soon.
