Ever since Fixer Upper premiered, Joanna Gaines has been serving us serious style envy. Whether she’s in jeans and a ball cap or rocking the red carpet with her husband Chip, the mom of five always seems to look flawless.
Her secret might just be that she sticks to simple, neutral colors and accessories, and avoids bold shades like red. But when it came to her outfit for the cover of the summer 2019 issue of Magnolia Journal, Joanna threw caution to the wind and decided to go all-in on a bright ensemble.
“This was shot in the front yard at the farm and I wanted to be in a red dress,” she explains in a video on her . “Typically I like wearing black, white, denim, and every now and then khaki. Red is a stretch.”
So why deviate from her usual standbys?
“I thought for the ‘Freedom’ issue, for the summer issue, I will go bold, I will wear red. So I wore red, and I wore mustard yellow shoes,” she explained. “I don’t know, I think it’s fun.”
And it’s not just fun for Joanna, either. Apparently, Chip is a big fan of her loud look, too! “Chip loves seeing me in a red dress, that’s always been his dream,” she said.
But don’t expect the author to start incorporating crimson into her wardrobe on the regular (though we wouldn’t mind if she pulled out this frock on her new network every now and then). It sounds like this is a one-time-only circumstance.
“That’s the only time you’ll ever see me in a red dress, people. Right there,” she said.
